(YORK, PENNSYLVANIA) Rick Eckert, of York, Pennsylvania, traveled west to
the 20th annual ‘O’Reilly Chili Bowl Midget Nationals’ at the Tulsa Expo
Raceway in Tulsa, Oklahoma last weekend. The World of Outlaws Late Model
Series driver was behind the wheel of the Mike Miller Racing / Ray’s Yamaha
/ Don Ott Racing Engines #1x Stealth Chassis, owned by Mike Miller of
Reading, Pennsylvania. The wildly popular indoor Midget event drew upwards
of 270 competitors for the four-day event.
Rick failed to make the starting field for the venerable event, as he buried
himself deep in the field during his qualifying night on Thursday. The
driver known as “Scrub” to fans nationwide drew a terrible number, which put
him in the back of the ninth heat race. With passing at a minimum, Rick
could only advance up to the sixth position in his heat. Another sixth
place effort in his Last Chance Race on Thursday would bury Rick in the
H-Main on Saturday. He was able to win his H-Main, but his run through the
“alphabet soup” racing program ended with an eighth place run in the G-Main.
Fellow Dirt Late Model and World of Outlaws Late Model Series driver Tim
McCreadie, of Watertown, New York shocked the open wheel racing world by
winning the 20th annual ‘O’Reilly Chili Bowl Midget Nationals.’ T-Mac
bested Jay Drake, Cory Kruseman, Brad Kuhn, and Josh Wise to bring home the
biggest win of his career.
“First off, I want to congratulate T-Mac for an awesome job all week out in
Tulsa,” commented Eckert after returning from Oklahoma. “He put on a show
out there and it was great to see a Dirt Late Model driver win that race.
As for my week, it wasn’t nearly as good as (Tim) McCreadie’s. We just got
buried on Thursday night by drawing a bad number. Then during the Last
Chance Race, our motor shut off briefly for some reason and that allowed six
cars to go by me. It just wasn’t our weekend, but I have to thank Mike
Miller and Ray’s Yamaha for giving me the opportunity to race in the Chili
Bowl again. It is a great event and I look forward to go back again next
year!”
Rick will once again be out of his familiar cockpit this coming weekend, as
he will jump behind the wheel of a 600cc Microsprint at the Boardwalk Hall
in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The indoor asphalt event will take place this
Friday and Saturday, January 20-21 and Rick will be competing against his
nephew for one of the few times. There are over 200 cars entered for the
event including Billy Pauch, Ted Christopher, Doug Esh, and many more. More
information on this event can be found online at www.boardwalkhall.com and
www.aarn.com.
“I am really looking forward to this weekend for a couple of different
reasons,” Eckert went on to say in the telephone conversation. “I haven’t
got to watch my nephew race very often because of our busy racing schedule,
so it will be fun to actually race against him all weekend. It will also be
a blast to get out there on the asphalt again. I played around with the
Microsprint a little yesterday and wore a set of tires off the thing in the
parking lot here.”
