Roanoke, VA— May 21, 2008—The parking lot at the Advance Auto Parts Store Support Center in Roanoke, Virginia was transformed today into a mobile pit area, as the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series set up shop for a ‘Meet & Greet’ as part of a Corporate Day at the headquarters of the company.
The Store Support Center has around 900 team members, many of whom were able to tour the mobile pit area, get an up close view to an 850-plus horsepower World of Outlaws machine, meet some of the drivers, and even take a tour of the series Command Center and meet series officials.
Drivers that were present included: 20-time series champion Steve Kinser whose familiar green No. 11 was a big hit with Advance Auto Parts team members, as well as two-time defending series champion Donny Schatz, with his No. 15 Tony Stewart Racing machine. Also taking part in the festivities was current series point leader Jason Meyers, with his No. 14 car. Work’N Woody, the Official Push Truck and Safety Vehicle of the World of Outlaws was also on hand for the festivities.
“I am very excited, especially for the team members here at the Store Support Center,” said Mike Paris, Motorsports Marketing Manager for Advance Auto Parts. “This has been one of the best turnouts that we have had for an event at our office. You can’t describe how great of an event this is. It was really incredible.”
Kinser, who is known from coast-to-coast, was able to meet with a number of fans that have followed him throughout his career, in addition to meeting a number of individuals that were seeing a winged sprint car for the first time. The series will compete for the first time ever in the state of Virginia this weekend at Virginia Motor Speedway on Saturday, May 24 and that has Kinser very excited, as does the involvement of Advance Auto Parts with the World of Outlaws this season.
“It’s great to have Advance Auto Parts as a sponsor and a partner of the World of Outlaws,” said Kinser. “We don’t get to run a lot in this area, so it is relatively new to a lot of employees at Advance. It was nice to show them the cars and let people know that we have some live television races coming up that they can watch. I guarantee that a lot of employees that came out here today will be tuning in on Friday. It’s good for all of us, for the team, the World of Outlaws and Advance Auto Parts as well. It’s been a real good day.”
Schatz signed autographs for a large portion of the day and also posed for a numerous photos with many children that were taking part in the festivities. He too enjoyed visiting with all of the individuals that took part in the event, of which many showed their enthusiasm and support by wearing specially designed Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series t-shirts that each team member at the Store Support Center as well as the Distribution Center received.
“These are all the people that make this happen for us the World of Outlaws and Advance Auto Parts,” said Schatz. “It has been a big hit today and its fun for us to be here. We’ve enjoyed the day here and have gotten to show them the kind of racing that we are into. Hopefully we’ll make their jobs a little easier and a little more fun.”
Another highlight of the day was all of the team members, in addition to the drivers, their crews and World of Outlaws officials gathering around the three race cars for a group photos that was taken from the roof of the building and encompassed the entire mobile pit area.
“They had a great turnout today,” said Meyers. “It was great to meet the people on the ground that work with Advance Auto Parts. These are the people that make it possible for Advance Auto Parts to be part of our sport. It’s a pleasure to get to meet them and spend some time with them. A lot of people enjoyed themselves today and we’ve had a great time as well.”
The day began with the Kinser, Meyers and Schatz along with their crews and several World of Outlaws officials going on a tour of the Advance Auto Parts Distribution Center, also located in Roanoke. The Distribution Center has nearly 400 team members and was the top-ranked facility for safety and efficiency of the eight Distribution Centers the company operates around the country last year.
“We love giving the tour,” shared Paris. “We want them to feel like they are part of our company, that’s the main thing. We want them to see how we work. The World of Outlaws opened their doors and taught us everything about their sport and explained everything to us and educated us. We wanted to do the same thing and make them feel that they are part of Advance Auto Parts and now that we are all in this together and all understand each other.”
After the tour of the Distribution Center, Kinser, Meyers and Schatz handed out posters and signed autographs for the team members during their break time. All three drivers were thoroughly impressed with the Distribution Center and the efficiency in which it operates and all of the logistics involved in shipping and receiving thousands of auto parts daily.
“What an amazing facility,” noted Meyers, a California native. “They have great organization and it’s a company that is doing a great job. They are very productive and it’s neat to see their goals and accomplishments and the way they do things. We got to tour the facility that is number one in the company, and it was great to meet those people and spend time with them.”
