(05/01/08) – Keeping with the 'history' theme from last weeks story-line the BABBSTER Shannon Babb has finally cracked the Top 10 of the National RANKINGS points standings for Dirt Super Late Models. In 2007 the two-time Dirt Track World Champion (02' & 06') was at the top of the National RANKINGS for most of the season and was the only racer to dethrone the standings leader (and eventual National RANKINGS Champion) Scott Bloomquist, even though it was only for a week. While his NASCAR boss Clint Bowyer was victorious in Virginia Saturday night, the # 18 'J&J Steel, Traeger Wood Pellet Grills, Scheck Industries' sponsored (brand new) Rocket chassis / Clements powered, Chevrolet Impalla SS was taking the checkers in Missouri with the World of Outlaw Late Model series. CATDADDY Clint Smith, may have things back within range, as the Georgia native set a new track record in qualifying, before turning in his 3rd Top 5 finish that sets himself firmly in 10th in the standings.
Just out of the Top 10 is Saturday's Lucas Oil Dirtcar series winner Brady Smith. The PRODI-CHEESE (get it.... Wisconsin) racer pocketed the $9,999. for his efforts Saturday in the '99 EXTRAVAGANZA' as he piloted the # 2 'AMSOIL, Big Red Motorsports, Mid-States Equipment Inc.' Bloomquist-Team Zero / Vic Hill powered, Chevrolet to it's first victory of 2008. Oddly enough it's the first Team Zero (National RANKINGS guidelined) victory since Owens' last in mid-March, even though the bossman pocketed a Lite RANKINGS event ($ 4,000.), Saturday night at his home turf in Tennessee. T-MAC Tim McCreadie and Billy Drake, both had solid National RANKINGS finishes this weekend. McCreadie raced two nights in North Carolina, with a pair of runner up finishes to his credit (though only one counted for a guidelined tally), while Drake charged from zero-status to almost hero status, after taking a series provisional start at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway.
As for MR. SMOOTH, the National RANKINGS points leader Billy Moyer, tallied a 3rd place nod, Saturday at the I-44 WoOLMs event and now holds a solid eighty (80) points advantage over the O-SHOW Jimmy Owens and his six (6) guidelined $10,000. or higher wins. Rick Eckert, who winless streak is vastly approaching two years, had a solid runner-up finish, after leading almost a dozen laps. Eckert is currently ranked 13th overall, just ahead of the ONE WIN WONDERS club of Don O'Neal, Scott James and Chub Frank. Team-Zero IRONMAN Chris Madden, coping with the tragic loss of his father-in-law, raced to a 3rd place finish, Saturday in Lawndale, NC. Madden (aka. SMOKEY) takes over 7th in the overall standings, moving past Terry Casey. The weekend MEGA-MAY kicks off with the LODs: DIAMOND NATIONALS (co-sanctioned with the Midwest Late Model Racing Association) $40,000. to-Win event Friday and Saturday, as all the top guns will be remain in Missouri.
