Jay Blair Returns to SUPR Victory Lane in the O'Reilly NCRA/SUPR Challenge

by Istvan Molnar

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Two-time O’Reilly SUPR Late Model Champion Jay Blair returned to victory lane with a dominant run at State Fair Speedway tonight. Blair drove his Creel Brothers/Stuckey Enterprises/Xtreme Graphics Wall2Wall Performance Engines powered Chevrolet Monte Carlo MasterSbilt to the win before a big holiday weekend crowd on hand for the O’Reilly Auto Parts NCRA/SUPR Challenge.

This was Blair’s 11th O’Reilly SUPR Late Model victory but his first since 2004 as Blair has run a limited schedule with SUPR. Blair’s decision to take the Voodoo Motorsports team on the road this weekend saw the team steadily improve starting with an 11th place finish at Baton Rouge after an early trip to the pits to repair damage from contact with Chris Wall. Champion Park would see a ninth place finish before a marked improvement at Devil’s Bowl where he finished fourth.

Blair earned the B&K Underground Top Qualifier award after starting fourth in the second heat race and he raced to the win to earn the pole on passing points. Blair started alongside fellow Louisiana competitor Sam Patrick and jumped to the early lead. Blair took to the 3/8th mile oval in just his first visit to the track. “We were real good tonight. We were actually pretty good last night (at Devil’s Bowl) and we ran it identical to last night. We didn’t change a thing all night.”

Howard Willis started 17th in the feature and he performed an impressive charge through the field to claim second but he confided with Blair that he didn’t have anything for the Angie Assassin tonight. Still Willis did leave with a $50 bonus from Blair’s primary sponsor, Creel Brothers Excavating for the Hard Charge of the night. Willis was wheeling the Tony Flynn Racing #23.

Ada, Oklahoma’s Shawn Brassfield score a strong third after starting seventh and he was followed by Ronny Adams and Michael Coleman who engineered a strong charge of his own, moving from 15th to fifth in the 30-lap feature.

Sam Patrick, Ray Moore, Jason Ingalls, Tom Lorenz and Jon Mitchell rounded out the top ten in an impressive performance by the SUPR competitors at the end of a long July 4th holiday weekend that saw teams travel over 700 miles in 4 nights.

24 O’Reilly NCRA and SUPR Late Models were on hand. Three heat races were run to determine the starting order with Jason Ingalls scoring the win in heat one, Blair topped heat two and Sam Patrick took the win in heat three.
