The last race of the season on the SRRS schedule saw packed stands and pits even though it was a chilly November evening. When the gates opened and the Super Late Models started fileing in there ended up being 43 entered. Not a bad car count for a $3000.00 to win race but it only indicates the great support that the racers have shown for the Southern Regional Racing Series all year.
When the qualifing started Byron Michael from Florence Alabama ended up setting on the pole and winning the Performance Connwection pole award with a 13.274 fast lap.His time was later matched by Mike Collins who started on the outside front row of the feature. When the green flag dropped the lead was swapped back and forth between Michael and Collins until a caution came out allowing Collins to lead the field to the green.Michael decided that he would need to move to the top to get around Collins and from there it was clear sailing for the TNT Fireworks sponsered Rocket of Michael.Opening up a 10-12 car length lead Michael was the cream of the crop on this cold November night.
However Tony Morris who started back in 18th place in his M31 TNT chassied mount was putting on a show for the fans.Racing high and low Morris was picking them off one by one as he headed to the front.Such a bad starting position made Morris have to do some serious racing to try and make a decent night of it.However he ran out of laps before he was able to catch the Michael's car and had to settle for a well deserved 3rd place finish.
The night of racing ended up with The Performance Connection having 2 engines out of the top 3 cars.
Byron Michael won the S.R.R.S points championship after starting the season off with some miserable luck. One of his car owners Randy Pickens said after the race "Nobody could have made me believe we would win the championship the way our season started out.We were about ready to fold our tents and take up fishing."
