RoC Dirt Modified and Sportsman Tour Make First Appearance to New Egypt Speedway June 21

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Event number two of the Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour South Region is set to take place this Wednesday at the New Egypt Speedway in New Egypt, New Jersey. The “Metal Fab R.o.C Rocket Rumble” will feature the Big Block/Small Block Modifieds in a 75 lap event. The R.o.C Sportsman Southern tour will also be in competition with a 40 lap event. Race time is slated for 7:15 p.m.

When the R.o.C tour arrives at the New Egypt Speedway it will be for the first time but there has already been an impact made by the speedway regulars. The first R.o.C South region event on June 6th at the Big Diamond Raceway saw a number of New Egypt weekly stars in competition. Current NES point leader Jimmy Horton showed the way for the majority of the 75 lap event only to have a flat tire derail his hopes for the win. Billy Pauch went on to record his second consecutive R.o.C win at Big Diamond and at the same time helped show that the NES teams would be tough to beat at event two.

Other New Egypt teams that had strong outings in the first R.o.C South region event of the season included Frank Cozze (7th place), Billy Pauch Jr., (8th place) and Ricky Grosso (10th). Horton eventually rebounded from the flat tire in that event that set him to the pits to record an impressive sixth place finish at the stripe.

With race one in the books the New Egypt Modified teams have made it clear that they intend on running for the R.o.C South region title. A number of invaders will be looking to make their mark this Wednesday. Grandview Speedway talents Ray Swinehart, Duane Howard and Ryan Watt all had top ten finishes in the last R.o.C event. R.o.C North region point leader Alan Johnson is currently the only driver that is in the top five in both regions as he sits in fourth place in the South regional standings. Defending Race of Champions Modified Tour Co-Champion Bobby Varin has a brand new car ready to be debuted at New Egypt as well.

Fifty Modified teams took part in race number one and another strong contingent of Race of Champions stars will be gunning for the $4,000 top prize in the 75 lap “Metal Fab R.o.C Rocket Rumble”. Joining the Modifieds will be the R.o.C Sportsman in a 40 lap feature program. Current South region point leader and NES competitor Willie Osmun will be looking to pad his point lead. On Memorial Day Osmun became the first repeat Sportsman R.o.C winner since its inception last season. He opened the season by winning at Five Mile Point Speedway (NY) and then backed it up with the Memorial Day win at the Penn Can Speedway (PA).

The Race of Champions has a storied history in the state of New Jersey. The R.o.C Asphalt Modified 200 is the second oldest consecutive run auto racing event in the nation. Only the Indianapolis 500 has had more consecutive events. Trenton Speedway hosted the prestigious event between 1972 and 1976 on the asphalt. In later years the Flemington Fair Speedway held the annual fall classic between 1992 and 1995. In 1996 the event found a home in Oswego, New York where it is still held today.

The Race of Champions started on the dirt of the Langhorne Speedway in 1951 and last year it returned to its roots with the development of the R.o.C Dirt Series. Later this season the Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Tour will compete at the Wall Township Speedway.
