View Full Version : Rocket suspension problem
On a 04 Rocket, What would cause the left rear in front shock to snap the shaft? It has the extension on it. Here is a pictiure coming out of turn 2 (the 00 car) http://www.vamotorspeedway.com/uploads/WK1006LMACTION11.jpg

This is due to not having enough travel on the front shock mount. You will need to have a 90 degree style shock mount, this turnes the shock end 90 degrees and keep it from binding. If you need one I have them is stock and are $39.95. If you are binding the front one you may be close to binding the rear one also. Having one on the front is a must if the car is hiking up much, you can get away without one on the back if the car isn't to hiked up and bar angles are reasonable. I recommend one for the both the LR's but the right side it isn't neccasary. The rear LR one is a saftey factor as the 40 dollars for the mount is alot cheaper then buying shafts or shock ends.

I would agree with Billet to an extent on this, and his shock mounts are nice pieces (if they're the one's Rocket sells, then we have them and I would recommend them), but Rocket calls for the standard shock mount to be run on that front shock. When we asked Anthony about this, he stated that the angled mounts put the shock end at a different drop than they wanted. If you have that mount in the wrong location on the birdcage, OR you aren't running a 1" extension, you will have that problem (snaps the end off).
Rocket want's the angled mount on the REAR shock and the standard mount on the front shock on the newer cars (I believe this is the same for the '04). The RR should be just the standard mount.
We run a standard shock mount on the birdcage for the LRF shock (Ohlins) and we don't have any issues with bind, even when the rear end is at full extension (NOT running the limiter bar).
What birdcages are you running?
RB
We are using the aluminum welded birdcages that Rocket sells and we are using a 1" shock extension on the shock on lr in behind and a 2” shock extension for the shock on lr in front.

Well, that's part of the problem. Get the 1" extension off of the rear shock and put it on the front shock. The rear shock needs no extension.
The mount for the front shock needs to be in the top holes on the birdcage. We ran the angled mounts on those cages on both the front and the rear (with success) before we switched to the new TWM bearing cages.
Another part of the problem is that you could be over indexing the birdcages which could be causing this problem as well.
RB
Either I'm missing something here or you missed what I said "we are using a 1" shock extension on the shock on lr in behind and a 2” shock extension for the shock on lr in front" I already have a 2" extension on the front. Indexing is good. Are you saying to use swivel mounts on both left rears? Thanks!:-?

PMS your missing what RB is telling you. He said that you DO NOT NEED the extenision on the rear shock and that the 2" ext. on the front shock was too much, combine the two and your realling letting your b/cage rotate too much.
Too simplfie, the swive mount only on the rear shock and NO EXT. on the shock. The front shock straight mount in the top holes of the b/cage. 1" shock extension.
Maybe that cleared up the muddy waters
Thanks bizkit for translating it into "Gump" Now I understand:-D

Let me clearify something here.
1. RB rocket doesn't get the mounts from me.
2. The intent of recommending the 90 degree mounts for both sides of the LR is to have more travel and eliminate the possibility of over traveling the rod ends of the shocks. Obviously Rocket has it figured out that if you have the front shock (set length extended with a certain amount of extension) and the birdcage mount at a certain drop then you shouldn't overtravel the mount. However as you spread the bars apart on the frame you are increasing the index on the cage and make the shock reach is out of travel point quicker. Having the 90 degree mount is a safety factor and allows you to increase the LR travel (if needed) and not have to worry about it.
3. Like they say you are probably bending it because you have to much travel because of the extra extension. So you have to choices, remove the extension and limit travel or use a 90 degree mount. Obvoiusly limiting the travel is going to affect your cars handling (maybe for the better or worse) and you may need to make a change because of this. It would be best to use the recommended travel that rocket says but if that doesn't work for you you can go back to the increased travel and try a 90 degree mount.
4. I don't see why the 90 degree mount would make the drop different but I guess I haven't looked that closely at thier mounts. My mounts are like the STD mount which puts the shock 1" above or below the two mounting bolts that hold it to the cage depending on which way it is flipped. There 90 degree mounts must be different.
5. I also like them because they use a quick pin instead of having a nut and bolts, just faster and easier to me.
Bizkit are my mounts that much different then rockets????

Sorry about that Billet... I thought I heard they got them from you, but I guess I heard wrong.
I don't know what the deal is with their angled mounts, but they don't recommend them on the RR or LRF. We ran them there on our older car, with no issues, so I don't really know why they want that.
Just to clairfy, the mounts I am refering to DO NOT swivel; they rotate the shock end 90 deg, and they are mounted at a fixed angle. There is no bind in these all the way to max travel...
Billet- Email me a picture... I am curious to see what yours look like...
Thanks Biz for deciphering my gibberish...

billet, Your mounts are like the one's we got from TMW for the masters, I've actually not seen any for a rocket, this car has straight one's on it. Why I was asking if you got the measurements I emailed you, because I know this winter I will put some Taylormade Performance bearing cages on this car. And you know me, I will sell couple sets too

RB, going to send in a few minutes.
Biz, I got it. I knew I had some time so I haven't went over it yet to double check everything.
