What does the Siping the Right Rear Tire do to the handling of a car? b/c My sprint car buddy ask me what it does and I couldn't really give him a straight answer b/c i usually sipe them across. We were given 2 different opinions on this and don't know which one is right.
1. It Creates heat in the tire b/c of the friction of it sliding into the corner.
2. It disapates heat but nobody really gave me a reason why.
What are your guys thought on this. and when are times to do it.

creates heat when sliding is what I would think...

Lateral sipes give the tire additional "gripping edges" which help produce more bite and in turn will make the tire wear faster and heat up more. However sipes around the circumference of the tire help the tread block open up at high speeds. This is where the cooling effect comes in.
I do the lateral siping deal all the time with 55's to try and build heat in them for the heavy track we run most of the time.

This is correct to a degree. Lateral sipes will help promote forward drive, and circumference sipes will help promote side bite. Now, I agree with what FT said about both directions, BUT I think the biggest factor to consider is the DEPTH of the sipes.
If you sipe to depth, you will build heat more than you will cool the tire, regardless of the direction of the sipes (tread squirms more which produces more friction; friction = heat). You will also increase the likelyhood of chunking the tire out.
If you sipe shallow (1/2 depth or less), then you will receive more of a cooling effect vs. a buildup of heat due to the edges only opening up to about 1/2 tread depth (cools the tread block). You will also reap the benefit of gaining additional traction due to the increased edges. The drawback is that you will have to resipe the tire to maintain the performance of it. Depending on wear, you may be able to get only one night out of it before it needs resiping, or you may be able to get 3 or 4.
Regardless, I would discard a tire once it wears to less than 1/2 of the original tread depth.
